Huron School of Nursing
Financial Aid Information
The basic concept of student financial assistance, as established by Congress and the U. S. Department of Education, is that the students and/or their parents have the primary responsibility for their education. If however, the family is determined by the U. S. Department of Education to have insufficient funds to cover the cost of education, there may be financial aid available to assist with these costs.
To receive financial aid funds, students need to use the Huron School of Nursing (HSN) federal school code, 006498 on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You must be enrolled at HSN to receive a financial aid package. Students must submit the Institutional Application to the Student Services office for initial packaging.
Student Services staff, with assistance from Educational Management Services, Inc. will process financial aid for eligible students attending CuyahogaCommunity College and Huron School of Nursing (HSN). The Office of Financial Aid at Notre Dame College (NDC) will process financial aid for students concurrently enrolled at NDC and HSN.
The School of Nursing, CuyahogaCommunity College (Tri-C) and Notre Dame College (NDC) participate in many federal, state and private financial assistance programs. Huron School of Nursing processes federal and state financial aid for Huron students. Notre DameCollege processes financial aid for their students. Federal and state financial aid programs include:
Federal Pell Grant
Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)
Nurse Education Assistance Loan Program (NEALP)
State Grant Programs
William D. Ford Federal Direct Student Loans
Eligibility for these programs is based on the information submitted on your FAFSA.
1. FEDERAL AND STATE GRANT PROGRAMS
Grants
The Federal government makes funds available for tuition and other college-related expenses to undergraduate students with financial need who are United States citizens or have permanent or immigration visas, and the capability of maintaining satisfactory progress in their course of study. Students who desire to apply for grants and loans must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The application may be obtained on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The school codes required for the FAFSA application are 006498 for Huron School of Nursing/Cuyahoga Community College and 003085 for Notre Dame. Students should submit a copy of their Student Aid Report from the FAFSA website to the Office of Student Services at Huron and the Office of Financial Aid at NDC.
a. Federal Pell Grants
A Federal Pell Grant is awarded to undergraduate students who have high financial need and have not earned a Bachelors or other professional degree. As stated above, completion of the FAFSA is required to apply for this grant. Amounts for the Pell grant for 2009-2010 are pro-rated based on enrollment and can range from $690 to $5,350 per academic year.
b. Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants (FSEOGs)
The FSEOG program provides grants to students who demonstrate exceptional financial need to help meet their costs of post-secondary education. A FSEOG does not have to be repaid. Eligibility is determined by information submitted on the FAFSA. Priority is given to students who receive a Federal Pell Grant.
c. Block Grant
The Block Grant is the Ohio funded grant that will replace the previous Ohio Instructional Grant (OIG) and Ohio College Opportunity Grant (OCOG) for private schools. Block grant funds that students receive do not have to be repaid. Eligibility is determined by information submitted on the FAFSA. It cannot be above the cost of tuition per semester. Block grants will not be awarded above the cost of tuition/fees in any semester.
2. FEDERAL LOAN PROGRAMS
a. William D. Ford Direct Loan Program (Huron School of Nursing/Tri-C)
This federally funded loan program is available to students to help meet their educational expenses. Eligible students may receive a subsidized and/or an unsubsidized loan for the same enrollment period. A subsidized loan is awarded on the basis of financial need. Students who are eligible to borrow in the subsidized loan program will not be charged interest before the repayment period. The federal government subsidizes the interest during the enrollment period.
An unsubsidized loan is not awarded on the basis of need. Interest is charged on the loan from the time the loan is disbursed until it is paid in full. If the interest accumulates during the enrollment period, it will be capitalized and added to the principal amount of the loan; the additional interest will be based on the larger loan amount. Loan repayment in the long run will be less if the interest is paid as it accumulates.
b. Federal Stafford Loan (Notre DameCollege students)
Stafford Loans are low interest loans available for both degree-seeking students. Repayment begins six months after you cease to attend on at least a half-time basis. Interest on the Subsidized Stafford Loan does not begin accruing until the six-month grace period ends. Interest on the Unsubsidized Stafford Loan does accrue while you are in school. You have the option to pay the interest as it accrues or you may defer paying the interest and let it accumulate.
3. CONSORTIUM AGREEMENT
Any financial aid-seeking student, who is enrolled concurrently at another institution, must have a Consortium Agreement signed by the visited institution. The student is responsible for payment at the visited institution, regardless of receiving financial aid at HSN. Students must have an official transcript sent to HSN at the end of each semester in which a concurrent course is taken. Failure to do so may result in reversal of financial aid funds received based on enrollment status at other institution. Students are advised to notify Student Services when considering dropping of or withdrawing from a course at another institution or HSN as it may affect financial aid.
4. DRUG CONVICTION
A federal law, implemented July 1, 2000 suspends aid eligibility for students convicted under federal or state law of sale or possession of drugs. A student who has been convicted of drug possession will be ineligible for one year from the date of first conviction, two years after a second conviction and indefinitely after a third conviction. A student who has been convicted of selling drugs will be ineligible for two years from the date of first conviction and indefinitely after a second conviction. Instructions on the FAFSA will help applicants determine their eligibility under the new law. A conviction does not mean automatic ineligibility. Students are encouraged to complete the FAFSA to determine possible eligibility for non-federal and/or private financial aid.
5. RETURN OF TITLE IV FUNDS
Federal requirements for returning financial aid funds are independent of the HSN withdrawal policy. For students who are recipients of federal Title IV funds, the funds may be returned to the aid program in the following order.
1. Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan
2. Federal Direct (Subsidized) Stafford Loan
3. Federal Direct PLUS (Parent) Loan
4. Federal Pell Grant
5. Federal SEOG
Please discuss your plans to withdraw and the financial aid consequences with a Student Services staff member.
