General Surgery Residency Program at Huron Hospital

Commitment to Education

Tracing its origins to 1856 when it opened as the 20-bed Lake Street Hospital, Huron Hospital was established as downtown Cleveland's Huron Road Hospital in 1874. In 1935, it was relocated to part of the former John D. Rockefeller estate in East Cleveland.

General Surgery Residency Program
Raphael S. Chung, MD, MBA, FACS,
Chairman and Program Director

The General Surgery Residency Program at Huron Hospital is fully accredited for five years of training, graduating two surgeons per year. The program has distinguished itself in many facets of general surgery, including trauma and critical care, and advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic surgery. The program recently received a commendation from the Residency Review Committee (RRC) for the numerous program improvements, and continued full accreditation with no citations (see article below).

Huron Hospital has maintained a well-rounded surgical residency program committed to teaching the art and science of surgery in a community hospital setting. The goal of our program is to graduate broadly trained general surgeons who will have attained the maturity, judgment and technical skills necessary to enter into independent practice.

The surgical residency program is designed to provide guided exposure to clinical experience in a structured manner over a five-year period. Theory and practice are learned side by side. The practice is a continuum of graded responsibility and technical complexity. A syllabus of reading, supplemented by regular conferences, grand rounds, lectures and daily bedside visits ensures the development of a system of knowledge acquisition. The degree of supervision is appropriate for the experience and aptitude of the resident.

The Huron teaching staff is comprised of surgeons dedicated to post-graduate education. They are all board-certified surgeons who hold fellowships in the American College of Surgeons and many other national surgical societies.

Surgical residents are assured of a balanced exposure to the basic sciences and specialties of surgery. Residents attend weekly lectures and case-oriented conferences, including presentations by visiting professors from around the country for monthly grand rounds and informal discussions.

In recruiting new trainees, the program is searching for candidates with the best mutual fit. To this end, a full, open and truthful exchange of information between the program and the candidate is essential. This is accomplished by dedicating entire days to the interview process.
